Badminton Study Guide
History
Badminton was first originated in India centuries ago. The first United States Championship tournament was held in Chicago in 1937. Walter Kramer of Detroit and Del Barkuff of Seattle were the first American champions.
Boundaries
The center line divides the service courts into right and left boxes. Serves must go into the service box diagonally across the net from the server. After the serve, the entire court is in play.
Serving Rotations
The first server of the game begins the game by serving from his/her right service box. This server continues serving and changing serving sides (right, left, right etc.) as long as they continue to score. Once his/her serving is over, the birdie is served by the opponent in the right service box.
Game Rules
The game begins with an underhand serve that must go over the net into the service box diagonally across the net from the server. Serves may hit the net provided they go over and into the correct box. Once the serve is received, players on both teams may move anywhere on their side of the court, but must return to their position prior to the next serve. The score must be called by the serving team prior to the serve.
The following violations are called faults and result in the loss of serve if committed by the serving team or loss of point if committed by the receiving team:
1. Server steps on or over the center line during the serve
2. Server fails to serve to the correct service box
3. Server fails to serve underhand
4. Birdie lands out of bounds
5. Birdie is hit before it crosses the hitters side of the net
6. Player touches the net
7. Birdie is hit twice to get over the net
8. On 3 player teams, the front player may NOT return the serve.
Basic Strokes
