** The P.E. staff would like to remind the parents of a few important pieces of information**
1-P.E. Uniforms are expected to be taken home on Fridays washed and returned on Mondays.
2-Any medical condition or concern needs to be brought to the attention of our nurses and your student’s P.E. Teacher. Doctor and parent notes need to be dated and detail the injury and limitations of the student. Alternate activities can be substituted based on the injury and its severity. Parent notes are good for three days. If the illness or injury will last longer than that, a Doctors note will be needed.
3-P.E. Units typically last 2 ½ to 3 weeks in length. At the conclusion of the Unit, the P.E. teachers will enter an Activity Assessment Grade, a Daily Expectation Grade and a Unit Test Grade. Each Unit is valued at 50 points.
The Activity Assessment category is worth 20 points and includes obserable actions such as; skill progression and improvement, performace/execution of skills, effort, participation, knowledge of content, and sportsmanship.
The Daily Expectations category is also worth 20 points and includes the P.E. Department's general rules such as; chewing gum, wearing jewerly, being tardy, having a rental uniform on, warm-ups, proper use of the locker room, behavior and attitude.
The final category is the Unit Assessment which is worth 10 points. This ten point written test will determine if the student understood the concepts of the sports unit that we just completed including basic skills needed to perform the sport, player position names and responsibilities, the general goal or objective of the game and some basic strategiesof the game.
If you have any questions or concerns about your student’s progress please do not hesitate to contact any of the P.E. teachers.
4-As the quarter moves into October, the weather will become cooler. The students are invited to bring in any sweatshirt and/or sweatpants for P.E. ONLY to be left in their locker and used on the cooler days. We will be going outside as often as possible when the conditions are dry.
For students who are looking for ways to become more physically active beyond their P.E. class, there are many intramural opportunities to become
involved in. Intramurals are free for any 6th, 7th or 8th grader to join. Now in the fall, we are offering Football Intramurals for boys and girls after school. This program runs from August 28th through September 13th. Intramural Volleyball will begin the week of September 3rd and conclude October 16th. This program is also open to any boy or girls interested in volleyball. Volleyball sessions are all in the morning, so students can attend both programs if interested. Westfield also offers Basketball (girls and boys), Floor Hockey, Cheerleading and Pom Pons Intramural programs as well. Look for further information throughout the year in the daily announcements.
Westfield’s sports program is also underway for students in 7th and 8th grade. The boys and girls Cross Country teams run in September and October and the Girls Volleyball teams are in season in the fall. In the Winter Westfield offers Boys Basketball followed by Girls Basketball. In the Spring the boys can join our wrestling team or the Boys and Girls Track and Field teams. Come and cheer the Westfield Wolves on to victory. Check the Westfield calendar for locations and times.
