Touch Football - Study Guide
Football Positions:
Quarterback: Runs the huddles and tells the receivers what pass patterns to run. The Quarterback determins on what word, sound or action the ball will be snapped on.
A quarterback can throw the ball, run the ball or hand off the ball.
Receiver: Runs a pass pattern and goes out for a pass. If they catch a pass, they run towards their endzone to try and score a touchdown.
Running Back: An offensive player who lines up behind the quarterback and can run with the football or go out for a pass.
Center: Stays on the line to protect their quarterback after they snap the ball to the quarterback.
Defensive Linemen: Must count to 5-One Thousand before crossing the Line of Scrimmage to get to the quarterback.
Defensive Backs: Guard the receivers and stop the other team from scoring.
Safety: A defensive player that lines up far back from the Line of Scrimage who is responsible for stopping the ball if it gets past the other defensive players.
Offense: the team with possession of the ball that is trying to score
Offensive positions consist of quarterback, center, and receivers (running backs are considered receivers).
Defense: the team trying to stop the ball from scoring.
Defensive positions consist of defensive linemen, defensive backs, and safety
PE Football Rules
* Start the game by setting up for the kickoff halfway between the midcones and the endzone cones.
* All members of kicking team must be behind the ball when it’s kicked.
* The Line of Scrimage is an imaginary line that separated the offense (team with the ball) from the defense (team without the ball). It is also where the ball is snapped from.
* The ball must be on the tee for the Kickoff.
* If the kickoff goes thru the endzone (A Touchback), receiving team will take 10 steps from the endzone and place the ball.
* If the kickoff goes out of bounds, the receiving team can take ball where it went out or make kicking team rekick from 5 steps back from where it was original kicked.
* There are no fumbles. If ball hits the ground it is down where it hits unless on a kickoff or punt. (Only the receiving team can pick up the ball off the ground on a kickoff or punt.) If kicking team touches the ball first, it is down where it was touched.
* Offense gets 4 plays (downs) to achieve a first down (moving ball past midfield). If offense begins their possession beyond midfield, they get 4 downs to score a
touchdown. If the offense crosses the midline on their fourth down they have earned another set of four downs which mean that in one single possession, the offense can have a maximum of 8 downs or plays to try and score a touchdown.
* If the offense fails to achieve a first down (or touchdown) in 4 plays, they lose possession of the ball.
* If the offense achieves a touchdown (earning 6 points), they MUST go for a 2pt conversion. Place the football three steps from the goalline. The conversion is one play to cross the goal line. If the defense intercepts a pass, tags the runner before the goal line, or there is an incomplete pass, the conversion play is over. The defense may not blitz on the 2pt conversion. If the 2pt conversion is successful the offense earns another 2 points giving them a total of 8 points scored on that possession.
* After a 2pt conversion (successful or not), the team that scored the touchdown stays ont that same side and kicks off. The other team walks down to the other side of the field to receive the kick.
* The center CANNOT go out for, or receive a pass. They stay and protect the quartback by staying in between the defensive linemen and the quarterback.
* Offenses may run or pass on any down.
* Five offensive Pass Patterns are;
"IN" - the receiver runs straight then cuts in towards the center of the field at a 90 degree or right angle
"OUT" - the receiver runs straight then cuts our towards the endline at a 90 degree or right angle
"CURL" - the receiver runs straight out then cuts back in towards the quarterback.
"SLANT" - the receiver runs straight then cuts on a diagonal path either to the left or right at a 45 degree angle
"GO" - The receiver runs straight back towards the endzone
* A legal forward pass occurs from behind the line of scrimmage. Only ONE forward pass is allowed per play.
* Offensive players may lateral any number of times per play. A legal lateral occurs if the ball travels backwards or sideways.
* An offensive player is considered down if tagged on the body, with one or two hands by a defensive player OR any part of their body (other than hand or foot) touches the ground OR any part of their body is out of bounds.
* On 4th down the offensive teams can either punt or go for the 1st down. They must declare this to the other team. There are no fake punts.
* If a receiver does not catch the pass from the quarterback, this is called an incomplete pass (it is not a fumble). The play is dead and the ball is placed back at the line of scrimmage for the next play.
* The Defensive linemen must count out loud... One-one thousand, Two-one thousand, Three-one thousand, Four-One thousand, Five-one thousand; before they can cross the line of scrimmage to touch the quarterback. If the quarterback passes the ball or runs it pass the line of scrimmage, the defensive linemen can stop counting and go after the ball.
*The defensive can stop the forward progress of the ball by:
- touching the player that is in possession of the ball, with one or two hands
- Intercepting (stepping in to catch the ball thrown by the other team's quarterback) the thrown pass
- Knocking the ball out of the air and out of the reach of the receiver
*The defense can decide to run a Blitz. A Blitz is a play where the defensive can rush the quarterback WITHOUT counting to Five-one thousands. This play must be announced loudly and can only be down one time for each set of four downs.
*Some common penalities that occur during a game include:
Defensive Penalties:
-Pass Interference-Illegally hindering the offensive player's chances of catching a forward pass
-Roughing the Passer-purposly running into or hitting the quarterback after the ball has been released. Can also be called when a defender hits the quarterback in the head.
Offensive and Defensive Penalties
-Off-Sides-occurs when any part of a player's body is on the wrong sideof the line of scrimmage when the ball is snapped.
-Holding-An illegal action where one player keeps another from advancing by grabbing him and holding him back.
